“No somos monumento ni folclore.
Somos memoria viva, herida abierta y canto que no se rinde.
Desde Sarhua hasta París, este cuerpo camina, reza, baila, recuerda.
Performance de Violeta Quispe: un acto de resistencia,
una ofrenda a las abuelas, una pregunta al porvenir.”*
In her work, Violeta Quispe perpetuates the artistic heritage of her parents, who came from the Sarhua community in the province of Ayacucho in Peru. She takes up their style, references and techniques, while taking a contemporary look at this visual tradition. Her work is rooted in a critical feminist perspective: she explores the role of women in her community, arguing for their greater visibility and representation in male-dominated spaces.
Violeta Quispe (Peru) is currently in residence through the Institut français x Cité internationale des arts programme
*We are not a monument or folklore. We are a living memory, an open wound and a song that won’t give up. From Sarhua to Paris, this body walks, prays, dances and remembers. A performance by Violeta Quispe: an act of resistance, an offering to grandmothers, a question for the future.
Takiy, Kukuy, Kuyariy is a performance by Peruvian artist Violeta Quispe presented as part of the exhibition D’ici 60 ans: relayer, co-curated by Ana Janevski, exhibition curator, and Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, head of artistic and cultural programming at the Cité internationale des arts, assisted by Simona Dvorák.
