Presentation

Launched in 2025 by the Françoise Association and the Cité internationale des arts, this research and creative residency programme explores the links between contemporary art, psychiatry and the humanities.

Conceived as an open research space, this programme is not a therapeutic programme. It is open to artists of all nationalities whose practice resonates with the notion of the ‘clinical’. This refers to a situated approach, as close as possible to the subject, ‘at the patient’s bedside’.

Within the context of the residency, this approach shifts towards the artistic field: creation is envisaged here as a grounded, relational practice, attentive to the contexts in which it takes shape. The programme thus promotes approaches that remain as close as possible to real-life narratives and experiences, and which engage in a reflection on the challenges of care.

The laureate will receive bespoke support from Albertine de Galbert, a clinical psychologist and exhibition curator, and from the programme’s partners.

The residency

The residency will take place from January 5 to March 26, 2027.
As part of the programme, the selected laureate will each receive:

• Dedicated professional support, meetings, and networking opportunities organized by the programme partners, including 4 to 6 working sessions with Albertine de Galbert;

• A furnished live-in studio at the Cité internationale des arts (Marais site), combining living and working space;

• A monthly grant of €1,000 net of taxes;

• Coverage of international round-trip travel to/from Paris airports or train stations, travel insurance, and research support (up to a defined ceiling, upon presentation of receipts).

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The residency programme has no age limit and is open to artists and creators from any discipline, at mid-career or established stage, and of any nationality.

Applicants must demonstrate fluency in French or English and a clear interest in the links between art (reception, creation, criticism, etc.) and mental health.

Applications will be assessed by a panel comprising four to six people, including partners and qualified figures from the fields of art and/or psychiatry.

In addition to the applicant’s professional background, the panel will pay particular attention to the originality of the research project to be carried out during the residency and to the added value of the proposed perspective, in line with the commitments of the Françoise Association and the Cité internationale des arts.

How to Apply?

Applications must be submitted to residence@francoiseartmemo.fr.

Once submitted, applications cannot be modified. Please prepare your materials carefully.

Collective applications shall result in a single application on behalf of all artists for a joint project presented.

Required documents :

• A detailed CV (2 pages max.), in French or English;
• A portfolio (10 pages max., in French or English) for artists; a dossier of recent publications for researchers;
• A statement of intent (2 pages max., in French or English) outlining your motivations, the relevance of the residency to your ongoing research, and your interest in the program’s context (Paris and the Cité internationale des arts) and professional support;
• One letter of recommendation from an institution or curator.

Residency Conditions

The laureates will be hosted in live-in studios on the Marais site of the Cité internationale des arts. Ranging from 25 to 35m², the studios combine research-creation and daily life, and include a work space, kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area. Each studio can accommodate up to two adults and one child under 10 years old. Additional fees apply for companions and visitors.

Unfortunately, the available live-in studios do not comply with current standards in terms of accessibility for the disabled. However, we are working to remedy this situation in the future.
