A historic partner of the Cité internationale des arts since 1996, the Samsung Foundation and the Cité have built a partnership founded on a shared commitment to supporting contemporary creation through cross-cultural exchange and long-term investment in artists' development.
Could you tell us about the context and motivations that led to the partnership between your institution and the Cité internationale des arts?
The partnership between the Samsung Foundation of Culture and Cité internationale des arts is rooted in a shared commitment to supporting emerging artists in expanding their research, networks, and artistic horizons. Based in Paris, the residency offers a unique environment for engaging with an international community. We believe overseas residencies are invaluable, enabling artists to deepen their practice while shaping their careers through new contexts, dialogues, and perspectives.

Looking back, how many artists have been hosted through this partnership? Are there any who particularly stand out to you?
To date, we have supported approximately 30 laureates, including both artists and researchers, through this partnership. Many of them have gone on to play significant roles in the contemporary art scene. One notable example is Ayoung Kim, who was selected as a Cité laureate in 2016 by the Samsung Foundation of Culture and was recently awarded the LG Guggenheim Award. Her trajectory reflects the broader impact of the programme in fostering artists whose practices continue to gain international recognition.
What shared perspectives bring you together with the Cité internationale des arts in supporting contemporary creation today and in the future?
Our partnership is built on a shared commitment to supporting contemporary creation through cross-cultural exchange and long-term investment in artists’ development. Together with theCité internationale des arts, we aim to strengthen global artistic networks and contribute to a more interconnected and sustainable cultural ecosystem

Cité internationale des arts represents a key node within our professional landscape: a space of dialogue, mobility, and experimentation that aligns with our commitment to supporting Korean artists and ensuring their practices are recognized and valued internationally.

The Samsung Foundation of Culture has been supporting residencies for Korean artists at the Cité internationale des arts since 1996. In 2024, the foundation extended this opportunity to researchers, aiming to expand its support for Korean arts professionals and further encourage cultural exchange between Korea and France.
