To foster the mobility of artists based in Indonesia and support the development of their artistic and professional networks, the Institut Français d’Indonésie (IFI) and the Cité internationale des arts (Paris) are pleased to launch the third edition of the Kota Residency Programme.
This programme is open to artists of all disciplines who have been living and working in Indonesia for at least seven years. It offers a fully funded three-month residency in Paris, including tailored support and professional networking.
Two artists will be awarded a residency.
The residency
As part of the programme, the laureates will benefit from:
- A live-in studio at the Cité internationale des arts in the Marais district, which consists of a single furnished space for both living and working
- A monthly stipend of €850 net of taxes
- Round-trip international airfare from Indonesia to Paris, along with travel insurance and visa costs
- Professional support, networking opportunities, and encounters organized by the program’s partners.
Transport of works or experimental materials will not be covered. A final report of the experience will be required at the end of the residency.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria
The programme is open to artists and cultural practitioners of all nationalities who have been living and working in Indonesia for at least 7 years. There is no age limit.
Applicants must:
- Work professionally in one or more of the following fields: visual arts, performance, sound and music research, performing arts, literature, design, architecture/urbanism, curatorial or art criticism
- Have a minimum of 5 years of professional artistic experience
- Be able to communicate fluently in English or French
For one of the two residencies, special attention will be given to applicants whose work relates to remote or non-urban areas of the Indonesian archipelago, or who maintain meaningful artistic ties with these territories.
Collective applications (duo, collectives) are not eligible.
Applications will be reviewed by a jury composed of representatives from the programme partners. In addition to evaluating the candidates’ professional backgrounds, the jury will focus on the artistic quality of the project, the value added by this residency in Paris, at the Cité internationale des arts, and the proposed work plan as well as any established contacts or partnerships in relation to the residency project.

How to Apply?

The application form must be fully completed and requires:
– A detailed curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages), in French or English;
– A portfolio of artistic projects completed, in French or English, including visuals of works with full captions (maximum 15 pages), possibly with video links or representative audio files (MP3, AVI);
– A statement of intent, in French or English, in which applicants describe their motivations for applying and their interest in joining the residency programme. They must explain why their work requires that this residency take place in Paris and at the Cité internationale des arts, from both an artistic, career, and professional network perspective (maximum 3 pages).
Residency Conditions
Artists will be hosted in a studio-apartment at the Marais site of the Cité internationale des arts, ranging from 20 to 35m². These spaces are equipped for both living and working and include a workspace, kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area.
Each unit can accommodate up to two adults and one child under 10 years old. Additional charges apply for accompanying persons.
Please note that, at present, the studio-apartments do not meet current accessibility standards for individuals with disabilities. Improvements are underway. For specific accessibility questions, we are available to provide case-by-case support.
