Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

WRITINGS

Laura Schwartz, born in Paris in 1986, is an exhibition curator, writer and cultural journalist. Editor-in-chief of the Guide Culturel des Juifs d’Europe, she regularly hosts cultural programmes on French and Israeli radio stations. She co-wrote the column En Attendant la Guerre for the French newspaper Libération.

Laura Schwartz has specialized since her studies in art history on the question of identity in modern and contemporary art. More specifically, she is concerned with the question of Jewish identity, the prohibition of plastic representation, and questions of ekphrasis in Jewish and Israeli art and literature.

In her curatorial career, she has mainly worked with young Israeli artists who question issues of territory and shelter. She has also built projects on the theme of distance in the Israeli diaspora and the impact of new technologies. The particularity of her work is that, as much as a writer as a curator, Laura Schwartz is personally involved in her exhibitions, even going so far as to intervene, as shown by her recent exhibition and writing projects.

Dance

Born in 1972 in Rio de Janeiro, Wagner Schwartz lives in Paris.

After studying modern literature, he worked in several research and choreographic experimentation groups in South America and Europe.

Author of 12 creations since 2003, he has received, among others, the APCA 2012 Prize (awarded by the São Paulo Art Critics Association) for “Best Artistic Project” with the show Piranha, and was selected by the Rumos Itaú Cultural Dance programme in 2000, 2003, 2009 and 2014. His creations have been cited in several books, including O fazer-dizer do corpo: dança e performatividade (The making of the body: dance and performativity) by Jussara Sobreira Setenta, 2008, and Am Rand der Körper: Inventuren des Unabgeschlossenen im zeitgenössischen Tanz (At the limits of the body: inventories of unfinished contemporary dance) by Susanne Foellmer, 2009.

His latest creation, A Boba, was presented at the Mostra Internacional de Teatro de São Paulo, MIT-SP and Playlist, in collaboration with choreographer Lorenzo De Angelis, as part of the Camping festival, at the Centre national de la danse, Pantin.

In 2018, his first novel, Jamais ensemble mais en même temps, translated into French with playwright Béatrice Houplain, was published by Editora Nós.

He was the programmer of the 10th Sesc Dance Biennial, international collaborator of the Contemporary Dance Festival, in São Paulo, and resident artist of the Curitiba Theatre Festival.

At the same time, he has worked as a performer for the choreographer Rachid Ouramdane, for the director Yves-Noël Genod, for the artist Pierre Droulers and for the filmmakers Judith Cahen and Masayasu Eguchi.
