Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Mary Sherman is an artist and professor at Boston College and Northeastern University. In 2010, she was also Acting Deputy Director of the Art, Culture and Technology (ACT) Program at MIT. From 2002 to 2003, she was artist in residence at MIT and, since 1989, has been the director of the TransCultural Exchange, an international non-profit artist-run organization.

As an active artist, she proposes to redefine painting for the 21st century, bringing it into time and space through sound and technology, which “blends into a luxuriant and sensual experience” (Cate McQuaid, The Boston Globe).

She has received three Fulbright scholarships from specialists (Istanbul, Taipei and Trondheim). Her works have been exhibited at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei, the 9th2 in Seattle, the Oboro in Montreal, the International Biennale of Digital Art (BIAN), the Zendai MoMA in Shanghai, the WUK Kunsthalle in Vienna, the Central Conservatory in Beijing and the Trans Hudson Gallery in New York, among others. In 2018, MIT Press/Leonardo Electronic Almanac reissued the catalogue dedicated to her work on visual and sound, What if You Could Hear a Painting.
