Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Joelle Siba

Year/s of residence : 2024, Guadeloupe Department of Cultural Affairs

Visual arts

Originally from Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe, Joëlle Siba was born at the foot of La Soufrière, where everything predestined her for a life of rumblings, fumaroles and false calm. A land with a rich and intense history, marked and traversed by extraordinary events, both human and natural, which has shaped and continues to shape the psychology, the way of being, the very foundations of its descendants.

After four years of study at the Ecole d’Arts Plastiques de la Martinique (Campus Caraïbéen des Arts), she turned her back on the establishment without obtaining her diploma. However, her passion for the visual arts remained with her, and she pursued it at her own pace and according to her own desires.

While her early visual work was an “archaeological” investigation into her own physical and psychological intimacy, it has evolved into an almost visceral need to understand, analyze and identify the complexity of her behavior and way of being as a Guadeloupean woman influenced and shaped by her geographical and historical environment.
