Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Tracey Snelling was born in Oakland, California. She lives and works in Berlin.

Through sculpture, photography, video and large-scale installations, Tracey Snelling gives her impression of a place, its inhabitants and their experience. Her work derives from voyeurism, film noir and geographical and architectural location. Within this idea of place, themes develop that transport the observation into the realm of narrative, with reality and sociological study at the centre.

Tracey Snelling has exhibited in galleries, museums and international institutions, including the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Palazzo Reale in Milan, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Kunstmuseen Krefeld in Germany and the Museo de Arte de Banco de la Republica in Bogota, among others.

In 2015, she was awarded the Joan Mitchell Fellowship for Painters and Sculptors. In 2017, she was awarded a scholarship to the Institute of Humanities at the University of Michigan and has also completed a permanent sculpture commission at the Frankfurt Historical Museum. In 2017/2018 she was an artist at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin.

Her work was recently exhibited at the Arsenal of the Venice Biennale, sponsored by Swatch, and at the Havana Biennale 2019.
