Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Anna Biriulina

Year/s of residence : 2024, 2–12

Anna Biriulina is an artist whose practice spans hybrid films and experimental art. Born and raised in Siberia, she initially studied political science and documentary filmmaking in Saint Petersburg, Russia. In 2024, she graduated from Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains and is currently undertaking a research-creation PhD on virtual reality as an artistic medium through a joint program with Le Fresnoy and the University of Lille.

Biriulina’s work investigates how individuals navigate their past and cultural heritage in a world increasingly defined by digital technologies. Her artistic inquiry delves into the tension between phantom identities—vestiges of lost cultural roots—and the resilience required to reconstruct fragmented realities. Through a distinctive fusion of archival materials and cutting-edge digital techniques, she crafts immersive counter-historical narratives that challenge conventional perceptions of history and identity. Among her notable works are The Imaginary Tatars (2022), an experimental autofiction documentary, and Memories of Tartaria (2024), a VR docufiction film that reimagines forgotten histories.
