Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

DANCE

After studying film and photography at Thammasat University, Thanapol Virulhakul began to be involved in conceptual dance performances as a dancer, choreographer and director. In his various projects, he attempts to question human perceptions of themselves and the world.

Since 2013, he has been co-artistic director of the Democrazy Theatre Studio in Bangkok. Recent works include Hipster the King (2014), which received three awards from the Thai Centre of the International Association of Theatre Critics and toured Germany and Japan, Girl (2015), a collaboration with Suguru Yamamamoto (Japan), and Happy Hunting Ground (2016), a co-production with Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Germany).

He is still working on how the body in a work of art can create political tensions between people. He uses specific circumstances and models in various forms as a choreographic approach to challenge the personal mythology of spectators formed by different contexts and models embodied in everyday life.
