Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Ali Zanjani is an Iranian photographer and documentary filmmaker whose practice, for more than fifteen years, has explored the links between image, memory, and archives. His work revolves around visual and narrative recycling, examining how existing images can reveal new layers of meaning and history.

For the past five years, he has been developing a wide documentary project focused on outsider artists in Iran. His encounter with their works—marked by profound honesty, personal dimension, and a singular boldness—has stirred in him a lasting interest in this still relatively unexplored field.

Through this project, Ali Zanjani seeks to give visibility to these often marginalised creators and to offer a sensitive look at their trajectories. Originating from contexts marked by precarity and social or psychological fragility, these artists find in creation a form of refuge and healing.

Through his photographic and documentary approach, Zanjani offers a reflection on the restorative power of art and on the ability of images to reveal humanity in its rawest and most sincere forms.

Visual arts

Anđela Zanki (b. 1992, Zadar, Croatia) is a visual artist based in Paris. She holds an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, where she worked as a professor at the School of Applied Arts and Design (2020-2025). Working primarily through spatial installations and mixed media, Zanki investigates themes of intimacy, temporality, and the body’s relationship to space. Her practice creates site-responsive ambient installations that provoke and evoke contemporary social conditions, examining collective phenomena through the prism of individual experience. She has exhibited extensively across Croatia and internationally, including solo exhibitions in Zagreb, Leipzig, and Ljubljana. Zanki is currently an artist-in-residence at Cité internationale des Arts (October 2025 – March 2026).
