Artists in residence
Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Mengjie Zhao is an oil painter whose practice centers on portraiture. She is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in China, and she received her master’s degree from China Academy of Art. Her works are held in the collections of multiple art museums and private collectors. Her creative work begins with an eternal quest for the theme of the human being, and through the existential state of the figures in her paintings, viewers reflect on their own identity anxiety and sense of belonging in the era. In 2026, she is an artist-in-residence at Cité internationale des arts in Paris.
