Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Dance

Lucas Bouan Tsobgny’s sculptures, whether long and brown, made of alimentary fabric, cardboard or a mixture of earth and silicones and covered in white dust, seem burnt and mummified, as if stopped in their tracks a long time ago.

Yet he breathes life into some of them, notably by dancing under a skin, in a performance that, like his installation, is highly organic. It is also ritual that Lucas Bouan Tsobgny, a lover of the stories he is told, conjures up through this experimentation with the body and materials. Métis, the rituals he reinvents evoke African traditions in which dancers emerge from the forest to embody animals or divine representations, as well as whirling dervishes. Each station is thus endowed with a specific narrative structure, which he traverses with grace. A chameleon-like performer, Lucas Bouan Tsobgny likes to slip organically into other skins and genders.

He sometimes imagines himself dancing next to the colorful, flowery wax fabric that symbolizes waiting, as a woman whose husband is not coming home. We also think of the women who have worn buckets on their heads for centuries, as he undulates his pelvis gracefully, shirtless, a bucket balanced on his head. It’s an aesthetic of debris and fragments. Earth, wax, tar. A little that suggests a lot. An exhibition that also tells the story of exile, inhabited by the artist who, he says, 4sees himself as a returnee. Marjorie Bertin, RFI journalist.
