Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Holder of a master’s degree in Educational Sciences, Cédrick-Isham Calvados is a self-taught Guadeloupean photographer who began his artistic career in rap and then slam.

He started photography in 2009, but his photographic work took a significant turn in 2013 through a project titled Guadeloupe, My Face. His approach, which focuses on highlighting Guadeloupe’s human heritage, involves capturing portraits of people he randomly encounters during his travels across the territory.

A little later, in 2017, he embarked on a career in photojournalism with AFP during the passage of Cyclone Maria in Guadeloupe and Dominica, leading to his photos being published three times in The New York Times.

Following his travels to Haiti, Cameroon, and Mali, he decided to focus on the theme of identity among people from overseas territories, realizing that only archival work can measure the complexity and uniqueness of populations from these so-called overseas territories.

He is also the author of the documentary Because We Come from Far, which received numerous awards at international festivals. Very recently, he exhibited his work at the BNF as part of the major photographic commission.
