Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Marielle Chabal, born in 1988, devotes her activity as an artist-director to the construction of fictions of anticipation – as a material in its own right – to question the spectator about the world around him. Her works take the performative form of symposia, films or exhibitions. The obsessive nature of the collaborative form within her practice is found in each of her projects as a desire to twist the world and political realities as she sees fit. Her projects, driven by a collective and “elastic” energy, are as many devices to apprehend the political realities that overwhelm us, to reinvent other realities where we can live differently in accordance with her vision of the world and a necessary reevaluation of the social role of contemporary art.

During her residency at the Cité internationale des arts, she continues her research for the OPP-OPS Program, the project for which she has just completed a year of research at the Jan Van Eyck Academy, around questions of education (in partnership with Nina CRUMP-GUEVARRA, Educator, Bogata, Colombia), systemic racism, gender, equality of indoctrination, revolutionary devices, genetics (in partnership with Mei ZHANG-WOO, Geneticist, Paris, France), psychology, fashion (in partnership with Elisa VAN JOOLEN, Artist and Designer, Amsterdam, Netherland), food, entrism, power relations, ecological solutions, hacking, manipulation and architecture (in partnership with Antonio BERMUDEZ-OBREGON, Architect, Bogota, Colombia).

After literary and political studies in Paris / Hypokhâgne-Khâgne and Sciences-Po, she studied Fine Arts at the Villa Arson in Nice and obtained a master’s degree at the Royal College of Arts in London. Subsequently she participated in numerous international residency programs in Norway (NKD, Sandness, AiR-Bergen), Palestine (El Atlal), Brazil (Casa do Careca Residência), Mexico (Zicatela Artística), England (The Bluecoat art center, Schwartz Gallery), Montenegro (FKK Resort), India (KYTA 2) and France (Paradise, the BOX, the Delme Synagogue). In 2016, she attended François Piron’s post-graduate program in Lyon and was awarded the Audi Talent Prize in 2018. Her latest project, Al Qamar, was shown in solo exhibitions at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2019.
