Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Born in 1988 in Paris, Sybil Coovi Handemagnon graduated from ENSA Bourges. A multidisciplinary artist, Sybil Coovi Handemagnon works with the photographic medium as a technology of representation and a vector for the fabrication of fictions. Her projects deal with colonial archives, their circulation, their re-articulation and the way they still contaminate collective imaginations by maintaining fantasies and fixist stereotypes. Calling upon the specters imprisoned in them, Sybil Coovi Handemagnon seeks to create connections, conditions of hesitation, inabilities to categorize through/with/on these archives, to question their latency.

Her work has been shown in group exhibitions at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the ENSBA in Lyon, the Hasard Ludique in Paris, and the Beursschouwburg in Brussels.

Literature

Originally from Réunion Island, Estelle Coppolani is a poet, writer and playwright.

Her writing focuses on diasporic legacies, particularly from a women’s perspective. She works on the oral and written literary resources of the Indian Ocean and on the phenomena of poetic recomposition engendered by situations of migration.

Going against a theory of dispossession, her writing defends the ideas of anti-colonial tradition and mythological abundance. In particular, she questions the specificities of asiodescendence in a French, hexagonal or ultramarine context.

Estelle’s writing projects have been successively supported by the Fondation pour la mémoire de l’esclavage (2021), the Mondes Nouveaux programme of the French Ministry of Culture (2022) and the Patrimoine et Création programme of the Département de la Réunion (2022). The writer is also keen to engage in dialogue with artists who are also bearers of diasporic histories, and is multiplying projects at the crossroads of disciplines: theatre, design, video, exhibition curating, etc.

Alongside her creative work, Estelle is also on the editorial committee of the feminist publishing house Les Prouesses, which has published works by Mariama Bâ, Alexandra Kollontaï and Audre Lorde.

Music

Mathieu Corajod

Year/s of residence : 2018, Institute for Acoustic/Music Research and Coordination

Music

Mathieu Corajod is a composer of instrumental, vocal and electronic music, experimental music theater, and interdisciplinary projects.

Author of works performed among others by the Orchestre de chambre de Berne, Ensemble Adapter, Ensemble Interface, and Ensemble Makrokosmos, Mathieu has also written and produced several projects of “théâtre musical” such as his show Scriptons or his score for instruments ad libitum: Collection. Mathieu Corajod studied composition from 2010 to 2015 under Xavier Dayer at the Haute école des arts de Berne – HKB. He worked from 2015 to 2018 as an assistant at the HKB while earning a second Masters in research on the arts in musicology at the University of Bern. In September 2018, he joined the Cursus in composition and computer music at IRCAM. In 2019, he was selected as a recipient of the Commission of the Canton of Berne.

Sensitive and concise, sometimes expressive or ironic, his music creates a new world for each of his pieces. Mathieu Corajod regularly explores the opposition between the fusion and contrast of sounds. He claims the immediacy of his musical material while seeking to create surprise, maintaining a critical and reflective approach. His use of technology is as much in the service of sonic research as it is of staging. He works closely with performers in his open, interactive or performative works.
