Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Cindy Coutant

Year/s of residence : 2022, Cité internationale des arts

Literature

Cindy Coutant is a visual artist, editor and researcher. Her work focuses on the desire of the living to connect with beings and things, the coevolution between species and techno-species, and the anxiety of the present time that collapses on past expectations of the future. Her installations, films and augmented readings are close to the genre of science fiction. They explore different issues such as love in times of technological espionage, affective economics, grammar of anxiety, cyberotics, hidden history of technology, or alternative narratives of the creation of the world.

Her practice-led research sets up a genealogy of the minor critique of technology to actualize our relationship to the future. It adresses the anxiety of bodies and the indeterminacy of affects as crucial issues for the military-industrial complex, but also as the foundation of another technological narrative.

In 2020, Cindy Coutant founded l4bouche with Estelle Benazet. The duo translates, writes, and exposes brutal realities and proofs of radical alterities produced by late capitalism.

Her work has been shown in Europe, North-America and Asia, in places such as Ars Electronica, Linz; Mamco, Geneva; Queer Sicilia film festival, Palais de Tokyo, Paris; La Panacée, Montpellier; SPOT, Taipei; Berlin Porn Film Festival, Berlin; CPH:DOX, Copenhagen; The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik; La Maison de la Littérature, Québec; Les Magasins Généraux, Pantin, and received the CIC prize for contemporary art (2018), an Award of Distinction (computer animation) at Ars Electronica (2019), a digital revelation mention by ADAGP (2020).
