Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Music

Julio Estrada’s music is the product of an ongoing process of research and creation. His work has been presented in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Among his works, Memorias, piano (1971), Canto naciente, 8 brass, the series of yuunohui, eolo’oolin (1983-2019), 6 percussions in space (1981-83), ishini’ioni, string quartet (1984-90), eua’on’ome for orchestra (1994-95), Murmullos del páramo, multi-opera (1990-2006) and a novel opera follow. 

Its interpreters are numerous: Arditti Quartet, Fonema, International Contemporary Ensemble, Ludus Gravis, NeueVocalsolisten, Percussions de Strasbourg, Redfish-Bluefish, SWF Baden-Baden Orchestra, Ellen Aagaard, David Albermann, Magnus Andersson, Irvine Arditti, Llorenç Barber, Jane Chapman, Laura Carmichael, Dalia Chin, Ko Ishikawa, Graeme Jennings, Christopher Jones, Garth Knox, Fátima Miranda, Barbara Maurer, Velia Nieto, David Núñez, Rohan de Saram, Kathryne Schulmeister, Stefano Scodanibbio, Erik Skjoldan, Mike Svoboda, Zsigmund Szathmáry, Felix del Tredici and others. 

Julio Estrada has been a guest professor at Stanford University, San Diego UC, Sorbonne, Rostok and others. He was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters (1980, 1986), the Universidad de México 2000 Award, Emeritus of the Mexican System of Researchers. He was one of the first artists to reside at the Cité internationale des arts in 1965.
