Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Grace Grothaus is a multidisciplinary artist focused on creating moments of reflection regarding human agency within the built and natural environment. Through her research-driven installations, sculptures, videos and performances, she explores the complex web of ideas that relate to pressing environmental issues and potential futures as well as the nature of what it means to be human in the world today.

What developments have led our species to such unique desire and capability for power over Earth? Can we evolve as a species to bring human consumption and activity back from the brink of climate crisis to a level which does not threaten the future of ourselves as well as every other living species? How do we collectively awaken to a role of multi-species respect, mutualism and stewardship?

Grace Grothaus’ artworks have been exhibited and/or collected on five continents including in the International Symposium of Electronic Art (2018) the World Creativity Biennale (2012).

Grace Grothaus earned a BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute and is currently pursuing an MFA at the University of California, San Diego.

At Cité internationale des arts, she will expand work on a growing global digital seed archive recording vanishing species from biodiversity hotspots throughout North, Central, and South America to the Mediterranean Basin (2019-present).
