Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Abdou Gueye is a Senegalese actor and director. He started in 2007 in the street theater, commonly called the popular theater in Saint-Louis of Senegal. After that, he completed several training courses with directors (Senegalese, Burkinabe, Ivorian, French, and Italian).

In 2013, he created with his peers the theater company Phoenix, of which he is the director. From 2014 to 2017, he toured with his company in about twenty cities in Italy, with the plays: Antigone by Jean Anouilh and La remontée des cendres by Tahar Ben Jelloun, directed by Massimo Luconi. In 2018, he joined the Barouf company in Paris for a professional training course: “Mettre en scène, une traversée du processus de création”, directed by Laurent Leclerc.

In 2021, he is one of the laureates of the French Institute of Paris residency program at the Cité internationale des arts de Paris, to adapt for the theater the novel De purs hommes by Mouhamed Mbougar Sarr, winner of the Goncourt Prize 2021. Self-taught, he also works on improvisation. His creations and his style evolve over the years, being guided by new techniques that he continuously explores.

Visual arts

Juan Gugger (Dean Funes, born in 1986) is a visual artist, working mainly on sculpture and installations. The physical development of his works usually incorporates the exploration of diachronic and synchronic dimensions of the location in which it appears, the materials that compose it, and given circumstantial aspects (for instance: what’s determined and what’s contingent, historical sites and contemporary consumption, materiality and politics, ecology and economy, history and ideology).

On the other hand, Gugger read the exhibition instance as a very codified and complicated formation where space is fragmented by power relations and roles. Then, his works engage in different ways with this complex field, integrating it as material and as content.

He has developed his work in cities like Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Porto Alegre, Los Ángeles, Bogotá, and Paris, among others. In 2019, he won the Kenneth Kemble Art Prize (Argentina) and is participating in the 69th edition of Jeune Création (Paris, France).

Visual arts

Louis Guillaume is an artist, an explorer, a walker, a self-taught researcher, an inventor guided by a single law, a single principle, that of the materials on which he has set his sights.

In fact, his practice is based around seasonal harvests, with the artist setting off every month in search of materials on long walks in the countryside or the city. There’s no need to travel too far: there are plenty of materials that haven’t yet received the attention they deserve, and they’re right there in front of us. Forgotten, little-known or, on the contrary, all-purpose, it is to these materials that Louis Guillaume gives a new lease of life in his installations and sculptures exploring their plastic possibilities. Huts, earthen paths, precarious mobiles… Louis Guillaume sees his creations as living works destined to evolve over time, as the seasons go by.

The materials sourced by the artist are chosen for their potential uses as well as for their purely aesthetic properties. The approach is amateurish, but it has reached a quasi-professional level. In his search for alternative models, outside the globalised production circuits, Louis Guillaume carries out investigative work aimed at understanding the properties of the materials he harvests and finding artisanal applications for them. For example, he recently became interested in black poplar wadding, which is ideal for replacing cotton on a small scale in the manufacture of down jackets.
