Artists in residence
Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

John Moussa Kalapo was born in 1983 in Bamako, Mali. Trained as an accountant, he turned to photography in 2010 when he enrolled at the Centre de Formation en Photographie (CFP) in Bamako, where he specialised in conceptual, creative and artistic photography. After several years of practising, in 2015 he was awarded a grant from the Tierney Family Foundation (Tierney Bamako), which enabled him to pursue further training in documentary photography.
He also undertook an artistic residency at the prestigious Market Photo Workshop (MPW) in Johannesburg, thereby strengthening his artistic and documentary approach.
John Moussa Kalapo uses visual storytelling and photojournalism to address the everyday challenges facing society. He observes and photographs with the aim of highlighting social issues that are all too often overlooked.
