Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Raïssa Karama Rwizibuka is a 24-year-old Congolese photographer who lives and works in Bukavu, in the province of South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a region particularly marked by violence against women.

Her photographic work focuses on social issues and seeks to highlight the daily lives of the people of Bukavu, her hometown. Through her images, Raïssa Karama Rwizibuka wishes to bear witness to the injustices and violence suffered by women in the Congo and to campaign for the emancipation of women.

Motivated by a desire for a profound change in the mentalities of her country and the vision that the world may have of it, the photographer collaborates with international media such as the BBC, Le Monde or RFI and with humanitarian organizations. Her work has also been exhibited in several Instituts français and published on the platform Afrique in Visu and Women Photograph (the 100 images of the year 2020). She also contributed in 2020 to the project Congo in conversation by Finbarr O’Reilly, winner of the Carmignac Foundation Prize for photojournalism.

The MEP – Collection Gervanne + Matthias Leridon – Cité internationale des arts residency will be an opportunity for Raïssa Karama Rwizibuka to deepen her photographic practice and to develop her personal projects while benefiting from the artistic and cultural dynamism of Paris.
