Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Marko Karo is a Helsinki-based visual artist working with photography and the moving image. His works engage with the diverse dynamics and temporalities of violence and the ways in which these are inscribed into our material and elementary surroundings. Karo’s work is currently supported by a three-year grant from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Marko Karo’s works have been exhibited in several exhibitions in Finland and abroad. His video work Sea Change (2021) won the first prize at the Blue Sea Short Film Festival (Finland) in 2022. Karo curated the Backlight 2023 Photo Festival Cruel Radiance with Harri Pälviranta. He also curated the Finnish ensemble of exhibitions entitled Falling Trees at the 55. Venice Biennale in 2013 (together with Mika Elo and Harri Laakso). Marko Karo has studied at University of Art & Design Helsinki (photography), University of Turku (Law), and at Birkbeck College, University of London (critical theory).
