Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

ENTRETIEN

How did you hear about the Paris-Vancouver curatorial residency program and why did you apply?

“I learned about the curatorial residency program from the Polygon Gallery in Vancouver. I am on their mailing list and received an email about it. I had been pursuing research in France that was compromised due to Covid-19 and I was eager to return to it. I was also at a transition period in my career and hoped that the residency would introduce me to new people, artworks, ideas and cultural context. Many of my colleagues forwarded me the call because they were familiar with my situation. I figured it was a good omen to have so much support.”

Tell us a little about your research and explorations on the themes of interiority-exteriority and openness-closure.

“I am trying to not over-determine my research too much, and be open to my encounters with places, people, artwork, exhibitions and events. I have been enjoying visiting cultural spaces that are situated around the periphery of Paris and learning about the unique ways that they are engaging with local culture and social conditions.”

An anecdote from your residency at the Cité to share?

“I am grateful for the hospitality, generosity and enthusiasm of the staff at La Cité. They have worked in many institutions and cultural contexts in France, and they are eager to share their knowledge and insight.”
