Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Born in South Korea, Mona Young-eun Kim, is a visual artist living in France. After obtaining a double bachelor’s degree in philosophy and cinema at Dongguk University in Seoul and the DNSEP at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier, Mona Young-eun Kim developed a work around questions of epistemology on subjectivity.

Straddling between representation of the conscious and the subconscious, Mona Young-eun Kim’s practice is dystopian, satirical and surrealist. She often uses virtual reality to realistically reproduce the surrounding space. Her work is current through the use of objects and languages. Several works question the understanding of signs and visual information as well as their possible evolution in the future. However, the signs she puts in place are not always legible. This ambiguity creates a poetic and humorous space. Her participatory pieces address the notion of social connectivity, offering the audience the freedom to reinterpret and appropriate them.

Interested in artistic interventions in the public space, Mona Young-eun Kim has created a work as part of the 1% Artistic (2017-2018) scheme for the rehabilitation of Les Halles Laissac in Montpellier. She also created a 360° geolocalized video as part of the artistic and cultural programming of the Grand Paris Express (2019). The video will be installed in front of the new Maison-Blanche station in the 13th arrondissement in Paris.

She participated in the innovative residency Season 6 (2018-2019), created by the Mo.Co., allowing young artists to work around the biennials Kochi (India), Venice (Italy) and Istanbul (Turkey).
