Artists in residence

Ícaro Lira (Brazil) is a visual artist and researcher whose work focuses on the contested acts of Brazilian history through an approach that encompasses fiction, documentary, archives and archaeological work. His exhibitions present structures that recall “museums”, bringing together forgotten fragments to produce an emotional composition: common and distinct objects, sets of actions, all dispersed in texts, debates, walks, etc.

During his residency at the Cité internationale des arts, Ícaro Lira developed his current project Foreign Museum as part of a research project aimed at drawing attention to the links and processes of migration between France and Brazil.

Icaro Lira studied visual arts at the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, and film and sound editing at the Darcy Ribeiro Film Institute, also in Rio de Janeiro. He recently participated in the PIMASP – the Independent Program of the São Paulo Art Museum (MASP). In 2013, he received the IPHAN Prize for Art and Heritage from the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage. He has participated in the 3rd Bahia Biennale (2014), Rumos Itaú Cultural (2016) and the 20th Sesc_Videobrasil Contemporary Art Festival (2017).

His recent exhibitions include solo exhibitions at the Jaqueline Martins Gallery, São Paulo; Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade, São Paulo; and Paço das Artes, São Paulo. He has recently participated in group exhibitions in institutions such as the Tomie Ohtake Institute, São Paulo; Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Milan; Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Rome; Le Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and XIV Biennale Jogja, Yogyakarta. With regard to residencies, Ícaro has participated in programs at Capacete, Rio de Janeiro; Sacatar Foundation, Bahia; La Ene, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Des mycetes et des algues, Spain and Associazione Culturale M.T. Alves and Jimmie Durham, Italy. He will present the exhibition “Museu do Estrangeiro” from November 21, 2019 to February 1, 2020 at the Galerie Salle Principale.

Justė Litinskaitė is an independent curator and art critic based in Kaunas, Lithuania. Her professional background includes curating and coordinating exhibitions, art mediation, journalism, and academic research. As a curator at Kaunas Photography Gallery, she has coordinated exhibitions of internationally renowned photographers, such as Jim Goldberg, Mari Katayama, Dorothy Bohm, Marilia Destot etc. She co-edited H – The Notion of Humanist Photography (2022), a publication dedicated to contemporary humanist photographers, and the 6th issue of the contemporary art magazine “Į” (2022), dedicated to emerging Lithuanian interdisciplinary artists and thinkers.

During her residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Justė Litinskaitė will carry out in-depth research into the collections of Lithuanian photographs in the French national collections, seeking to enrich and enhance these holdings. Working closely with the professionals in charge of these collections, she will help to present and rethink the history of Lithuanian photography through conferences and other events organized in the framework of the Season of Lithuania in France (12 September to 12 December 2024).
