Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Henrique Loja is as an artist based Born in 1992 in Portugal and base between Portugal and Switzerland. He holds a bachelor in Painting from Faculdade de Belas Artes – University of Lisbon and holds an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice, Work Master, from HEAD – Genève.

His material research practice develops through the fictive possibilities of matter. By understanding the materials’ temporality, the artist focuses on manipulating their chemical, physical and symbolic potentials to create speculative narratives on possible futures. How do signs, mythologies and cultural values mutate, fluctuate and evolve while persisting and finding themselves across cultures and times? His paintings and videos question the instability and impermanence of things, the loop of time, the elusiveness of life and its way of escaping any attempt at fixed definitions.

Recent exhibitions include: Swiss Art Awards 2021, Messe, Basel; Alternate Take 1, LiveInYourHead, Geneva, 2021; 2020 Wie zu Hause wo ich nicht bin, Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva, CH, Fridges are not frigid, Archivio Conz, Berlin, 2019 and Exercícios de Futurologia at the Municipal Galleries – Galeria Quadrum, Lisbon, 2016 (solo). He won the Kiefer Hablitzel Stiftung prize at Swiss Art Awards in 2021. He is the founder and co-curator of the non-profit space Mala, in Lisbon.
