Artists in residence
Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Theater
Marwa MANAI is an award-winning Tunisian theatre-maker, playwright, performer, and tenured associate professor of English. A graduate of the Tunisian National Theatre Acting School and Chevening scholar, she earned an MA in Theatre-Making from the University of York. Her productions include The Name of the Father, Untitled, Ancra-je, and In the Belly of the Whale. She has taken part in international programs such as ETC, Les Francophonies, ATT Berlin, and Transmission Impossible. Her work has been produced by the Tunisian National Theatre, and the Croatian National Theatre, and toured across Europe and the Arab world.

Babacar Mané

Dancer and choreographer, Babacar Mané began his artistic journey through theater, training with a small group in his neighborhood in the suburbs of Dakar. He then discovered Hip-hop dance in 2010. From performances to battles, he decided to professionalize by participating in professional workshops and training sessions. In 2015, following training in urban dance, he created JE, TU, ILS, a first solo piece that was highly acclaimed on the Senegalese national scene, and was a finalist in the “Simply the best” competition organized by choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly in Burkina Faso. The following year, he joined the National School of Arts of Senegal and expanded his repertoire to include contemporary, modern, classical dance, and traditional East African dances. In 2020, he created his second piece ENTRE 2 JEUX, which won the “Visa pour la création” programme, run by the Institut Français in Paris.
In addition to his career as a choreographer, Babacar Mané is also a performer and soloist, notably in The Rite of Spring (2021) by Pina Bausch, alongside 37 other dancers from fourteen African countries. This is an international and historic project, co-produced by the Pina Bausch Foundation in Germany, Sadler’s Wells in London, and the École des Sables in Senegal.
The variations of human relationships are at the center of Babacar Mané’s research, and his dance, which he readily describes as fluid and animal-like, draws some of its material and energy from observing nature, reality, and the alliances and solidarities of living beings.
