Visual arts

Originally from Île-de-France, Yohann Barlafanté, also known as Thodé, is a multidisciplinary artist, painter, draughtsman and sculptor who has been based in Fenua for some twenty years. Having graduated with a degree in architecture in 2001, his artistic career really took off during a formative internship at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, where he assisted a chief sculptor. This formative experience shaped his profound understanding of form, volume and sacred space. Continuing his training at the Fine Arts Academy in Costa Rica, he enriched his artistic language before settling in Paris, where he practised as an architect whilst developing a parallel artistic practice. His works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Paris. During his time in Costa Rica, he met Virginia Pérez-Ratton, founder and director of the TEOR/ética project. He inaugurated the first exhibition space run by the former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in San José. It was in French Polynesia that Yohann Barlafnaté found a particularly fertile source of inspiration. The ancestral Polynesian techniques he discovered during his travels nourish and transform his artistic practice. Despite a solid academic background, Thodé now favours “immediate perception”, an intuitive approach that allows emotion and instinct to guide the creative process. His work, situated at the crossroads of cultures and disciplines, bears witness to a constant dialogue between tradition and modernity, structure and spontaneity.
