Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Jill Mulleady

Year/s of residence : 2023, Art Explora

Visual arts

Born in Uruguay, Jill Mulleady lives and works between Los Angeles and Paris.

Jill Mulleady works primarily in painting, sculpture, and installation, exploring themes of memory, transformation, and the power of history.  In her work, references to historical painting are put into communication with images taken from both popular culture and personal life, creating a strange feeling of merged and frictional temporalities.

Her practice shifts between close observations of everyday reality and highly elaborated imaginary worlds. Her paintings can be seen as allegories for the contemporary experience of the image as interface: not just a picture but a mean of mobilising attention, bodies and affects within an increasingly virtualized social space. Recent exhibitions include : Consortium (France, 2021), Hammer Museum & Huntington Garden (US, 2020), Whitney Museum (US, 2020), Venice Biennale, Arsenale & Giardini (Italy, 2019), Swiss Institute New York (US, 2019).

Jill Mulleady will develop a screenplay that aims to be a visual experience and be a step towards creating her first film. She will take the time to research the social and geographical aspects of the story, thus gaining an in-depth understanding of the human conditions depicted in the scenes. The collaborative and experimental nature of the film will require the production of images and short videos based on tests, trials, improvisations, investigations, conversations, and exchanges.

Mulleady’s painting practice will remain active during the process, serving as a constant source of material.

Ann-Kathrin Müller

Year/s of residence : 2026, Ministry of Science, Research and Arts Baden-Württemberg

Visual arts

Ann-Kathrin Müller approaches bodies, objects, places, and landscapes from an archaeological perspective, exploring the recent past through research-based excavations. Findings are carefully documented and preserved, losses noted, and assumed certainties questioned. Her artistic practice varies between analog photo series, site-specific installations, video and audio works, and publications. Ann-Kathrin Müller studied at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts and completed the postgraduate Weissenhof Program, also studying political science at the University of Stuttgart. She was a fellow of Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn in 2016 and the Akademie der Künste Berlin in 2022. Her works are held in public and private collections in Germany and Switzerland.
