Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Yannick Sébastien Perianayagom-Mary

Year/s of residence : 2022, Cité internationale des arts

Visual arts

Yannick Peria is a visual artist born in 1998 in Le Port, Réunion, where he graduated from the École Supérieur d’Art de La Réunion.

He is kaf* and lives in Réunion Island. His subjects being drawn from his environment, his work is consequently strongly linked to the Reunionese creolity. He paints from photographs taken with his iPhone: images of his friends, places he frequents, interiors, and objects. Yannick Peria does not set any limits and paints whatever he wants, whatever he sees. Since his childhood, Réunion has changed considerably. Through his painting, he shows what remains of La Kour**, before the signs of its carefree life disappear completely.

The large format responds to the artist’s need to involve his body, which is his tool, in his pictorial practice. It is his whole body as a queer gay kaf from Réunion Island and his personality that he puts into his work. Yannick Peria’s paintings are like an intimate diary, he tells something in motion. The artist also practices music and video: he performs his life, then shares it in painting.

“His compositions are based on images taken on the phone and translate the mental images that preoccupy and fascinate him. It is in the banality of reality that he seeks the feeling recorded by visual memory.

—Extract from the presentation text of the exhibition Vous avez dit créole ? by Nathalie Gonthier, curator of the exhibition.

*kaf: Reunionese Creole.

**La Kour: could be translated as “the neighborhood”, and refers to the popular Creole environment.

Federico Perotti, born in Piacenza (Italy), graduated in organ and in composition, then specializing with Salvatore Sciarrino at the Accademia Chigiana and with Francesco Filidei in Paris. Finally attended the Konzertexamen in composition at the Hochschule für Musik Köln with Miroslav Srnka.

His work is divided between composer, organist (he is the titular organist of Piacenza Cathedral, Italy) and choir director. He also writes music for cinema and theatre. In 2023 won the competition “International Kaija Saariaho Organ Composition Competition” in the category of ‘Concerto for organ and symphony orchestra’. In 2022 he participated as a composer at the Quatuor Diotima Academy.

His compositions have been performed in different musical seasons including “Mese della musica” (Milan Cathedral), Kunst-station St. Peter Köln, Cité Musicale Metz, Milanomusica, Incontemporanea, Fondazione Teatri Piacenza, Taverna Maderna, “MontagKonzert” (MusikFabrik), “Knechtsteden Alt Musik Festival”.

The utopian challenge of music writing is to use the bricks of the past (compositional material) to build a new edifice in the future (performance, interpretative act or cinema projection/reproduction), passing through the eternal present, the timeless space of the paper score. Is it possible to make a tiny instant eternal?
