Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Emilie Pitoiset

Year/s of residence : 2024, 2–12

Visual arts

Emilie Pitoiset is a visual artist whose practice spans sculpture, installation, video, and performance. Her journey began with gymnastics, transitioned into contemporary dance, and eventually led to studies in art and philosophy (aesthetics). She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2005. Her work explores the tensions between control and the loss of control, drawing inspiration from the tragicomic narratives of society.

Through her creations, Pitoiset examines bodies in crisis, forms of resistance, and the fragile balance preceding a fall. Her artistic universe also engages with subcultures, melodrama, and excess to investigate how collective imagination shapes gestures and behaviors.

In 2018, she founded the company KittyFisher, began teaching at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, and initiated “Stage Studies,” a research project focusing on undisciplined bodies. Her work has been exhibited in numerous institutions in France and internationally, including the Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, Witte de With, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, and Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong. Her pieces are part of public and private collections, and she has participated in several artist residencies such as Kunsthalle Portikus, the Onassis Foundation, Lafayette Anticipations, Rupert, and Fondation Hermès.
