Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Florence Poirier-Nkpa is an artist born in France in 1972. Her studies in Applied and Visual Arts since high school lead her to the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (Paris Saclay). In 2004, she moved to St Martin in the Caribbean where she founded the HeadMade Factory Collective and works as an artist.

Florence Poirier-Nkpa speaks of her artistic practice as a space of encounter with the Other(s), from which she systematically emerges transformed.

Her work is always based on a process of encounter. Whether it is a drawing, a painting, a photograph, a performance or a film, the work of the other allows her to systematically renew the theme of her work. Sometimes he ironically criticizes the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol Sankofa, while revisiting Antonius Eisenhoit’s engraving Haeresis Dea and Serigne Ibrahima Dieye’s painting Les plumes de la fortune.

Through the use of black and white linocuts, she constantly seeks pretexts for narration with often very contrasting statements, which intersect and clash. These quotations from works are rarely engraved literally, but more often through allusions, comments, criticisms and remarks. Printmaking is an essential medium for Florence Poirier-Nkpa, who considers herself to be writing “Chronicles”. The artist likes to think that she disseminates anecdotes, ideas, important, diverse or significant facts in the form of printed sheets, in order to remember them or to forget them.

The project entitled Ensemble(s) rémanent, for which she designs installations, aims to increase the link between what the print shows and the meaning that emerges from it. This work puts the process of creation itself in abeyance by presenting reference works and linocuts, which are then associated with a combination of objects, sounds and texts.
