Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Dance

Majesty Royale is a dancer and performance maker interested in fashioning an alternate and ecstatic present/future condition for black queer bodies to inhabit. Her work speaks to her black, queer experience.

Living in geographical and ideological spaces not meant to support bodies like hers; her dance making is about survival through claiming agency over the circumstances of my existence.

This is Perseus in Medusa drag: weighted by naming, lightened by largeness. She employs flamboyance, language reconstruction & recontextualization, community building, and the training of the black superhero body. Blackness is a super-existence.

Majesty Royale is researching black social space as the grounds for this sort of training. She is particularly invested in clubs, balls, and parties for their ritualistic form. She is riding the strings that connect capoeira to vogue to house to breakin’ to swag surfin’ to my living room. Through engaging the already existent vast multiplicity that is blackness, she is layering as a practice towards creating pathways for transcending the ordinary: race, gender, walking, etc. Her work is a space for ghosts: phantoms, fantasy, fiction, friction, freedom, fluctuation, flaming, futurism, flyness.
