Ces voix qui m’assiègent…

Ces voix qui m’assiègent…, whose title borrows the words of Assia Djebar, brings together a selection of works, images, and archives produced in connection with the decolonization movement and the feminist struggles that have developed from Algeria, as so many echoes, fragments, and voices of emancipations still in progress.
Algeria is not understood here as a space confined by its national borders, but as an epistemological and critical engine capable of revealing the resonances that vibrate at the heart of our visual history.

The exhibition, initially conceived at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris in the spring of 2024, is now hosted in Algiers. Several of the exhibited works were created by former international residents of the Cité, presented through a journey structured into four chapters. It brings together projects by artists from Algeria, France (both mainland and overseas departments), Palestine, Serbia, Senegal, and the United States. From the tutelary figures of the many-faced Djamila(s), to the resurgence of Frantz Fanon, and the convergence of transnational solidarities to the echoes of resistance from past to present, Ces voix qui m’assiègent… invites us to traverse a constellation of paintings, sculptures, installations, videos, films, posters, and archives.

Ces voix qui m’assiègent… now emerges in a second chapter in Algiers, following its first iteration. It was conceived and created in Paris in connection with Arab Presences. Modern Art and Decolonization. Paris 1908–1988, presented at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris from April 5 to August 25, 2024, curated by Odile Burluraux and Zamân Books & Curating. Taking part in a particular moment of the decolonization of modern and contemporary art, Ces voix qui m’assiègent… aims to be an open platform for subjectivities linked to African independences and the decolonization of Algerian territory—inseparably intertwined with the polyphony of feminist struggles.
