Giselle Lucía Navarro’s works blend poetry and weaving.
In this piece, the artist takes Saint-John Perse’s poem Anabasis (1931) as her starting point; an epic and mysterious narrative, devoid of geographical and temporal reference points. Both born in the Caribbean, Saint-John Perse and Giselle Lucía Navarro contemplate the intersection of two worlds: that of a familiar territory and that of a distant land that beckons with adventure and an inner quest.
The installation Anábasis thus evokes the conquest of a new territory, but also the journey back to one’s homeland. The thread becomes a metaphor for transition, identity and memory, and maps out a journey of displacement. The details and colour nuances of the weave emerge from a vast blue background, evoking a journey inwards, towards the centre of a wild landscape where light, depth, vegetation and abstract forms create a scene that seems to gradually fade away.
Giselle Lucía Navarro (Cuba) is in residence with the support of the Bernard Grau Foundation – Académie des beaux-arts.

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1995.
With a background in design, she has pursued an interdisciplinary career as a visual artist and writer. The author of ten books, she is a leading figure in the Cuban literary scene of her generation.She has exhibited at the Havana Biennial, the 2nd Turkey Textile Biennial, the 6th Biennial of the South and the New York Triennial of Latin American Art.
Her works are held in the collections of the Pérez Art Museum in Miami, the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas and the María Cristina Masaveu Foundation.
