Nobuko Tsuchiya produces her works like a gardener would take care of a harmonious flower bed where varieties from all origins could enjoy being together. Finding a right balance among diversities, listening, observing a possible cohabitation between all forms of existence, living or not – plants, animals, atoms, viruses, cells, planets, galaxies -, such is her quest.
Since arriving at this residency, I have been strongly stimulated by the energy of Paris, the exhibitions, and the many people who are deeply passionate about art.
Most importantly, this experience has made me realize that stability had gradually narrowed my perspective. Now I feel as if my body and mind are constantly being shaken awake. I do not yet know how this influence will appear, but I am certain it will — or perhaps already does — affect my work in new ways.

I am currently preparing an installation for the showroom exhibition at the Cité internationale des arts, which will be open on 6 June.
It is a type of work that people can physically enter and experience from within the sculpture itself — something I am attempting for the first time. As I work with materials, different images continuously intersect in my mind: being inside an egg, a bird’s nest, clouds, a cell, the abyss, or floating somewhere without scale. Sometimes I feel I do not know what I am doing. I feel controlled by the materials, or by something alive inside myself.
I hope the work can evoke people’s own sensations, emotions, and personal associations.
