Academy of Fine Arts in Prague | AVU x Cité internationale des arts

Residency programme for AVU artists

The programme

In 2026, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and the Cité internationale des arts joined forces to set up a residency programme designed to support postgraduate artists from the Academy by providing them with a three-month environment dedicated to the development of a residency project and artistic work, fostering both experimentation, engagement with a specific context, and integration into professional networks.

This programme provides a working environment (live-in-studio accommodation), material and financial resources, as well as professional support (meetings, networking opportunities, and opportunities for visibility through open studios).

Academy of Fine Arts in Prague | AVU

The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) is a leading art university in Central Europe, founded in 1799. With over two centuries of continuous development, it combines a strong historical legacy with a commitment to contemporary artistic practice and critical inquiry.

AVU is structured around a studio-based model of education, where students work in small groups under the guidance of established artists and experts. This system emphasizes individual artistic development, sustained dialogue, and the cultivation of a distinct artistic position. AVU offers programs in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, new media, architecture, restoration, and interdisciplinary practices.

A defining characteristic of AVU is its integration of artistic practice with research. AVU develops practice-based doctoral programs and contributes to the international field of artistic research, supporting experimental, reflective, and transdisciplinary approaches to knowledge production.

As a relatively small and cohesive institution, AVU fosters close interaction between students, faculty, and researchers. This environment enables intensive mentorship and encourages collaboration across disciplines. At the same time, AVU is actively engaged in international exchange, partnerships, and research networks, situating its activities within a broader global context.

AVU also plays an important public role. Through exhibitions, conferences, publications, and collaborative projects, it contributes to contemporary cultural discourse and addresses wider social, political, and ecological questions. In this sense, AVU operates not only as an educational institution, but as an active participant in shaping the conditions and meanings of contemporary art.
