Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Daniela Stubbs-Leví is a Peruvian poet, musician and multidisciplinary artist. Her practice explores the relativism of memory as an ever-changing framework with which we measure reality. Through oscillations between disciplines, she is interested in capturing manifestations between absent-present, memory-imagination and space-place. In her work, she explores the dissection of music, as sound and notations, for use in experimental contexts that explore the nature of time and its link to emotion.

During her residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Stubbs-Leví explores the project “5 lois de l’absence”, a work that tackles the themes of mourning and absence, uniting two sciences that are a priori far apart: astrophysics and psychoanalysis. Stubbs-Leví proposes an imaginary space where psychology is applied to stellar phenomena. She focuses on the unfathomable event of an imposing star and, consequently, the collapse of space-time, defying all the laws of physics. A vertigo takes hold in the face of absence.

This approach creates a narrative divided into five movements called “Laws of absence”: Tidal echoes, Pathological orbits, Obsessional observation, Manic oscillation, and Dies Irae. Each “law” examines different manifestations of absence and observes its associations with memory, pain, ambivalence, repetition and interpretation. These laws function as thought experiments, superimposing correlations between the two sciences and threading stories through the prism of loss and disappearance.
