Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Mathilde Supe tells stories with film and text. Her work oscillates between cinema, from which she borrows the formal language, and a critical analysis based on theoretical content drawn from her studies at EHESS. Blending fiction, the collective imagination, media studies and the sociology of emotions, she questions the codes that shape our representations and skew our interpretation.

Particularly interested in stereotypes, over the past few years she has been developing her work around female representations. Her productions play with image commentary to reveal the underlying issues: using 2 screens to contrast a scene of a first kiss with a text revealing the discomfort of a cliché; idyllic vacations commented on by a melancholy voice-over; a lawyer rehearsing a plea on an empty stage… The image is always too present when it constructs a fantasy, or absent when it reveals an oppressive reality.

Born in Paris in 1989 and graduated from the Cergy art school in 2014, her work has been shown in group exhibitions at Salon de Montrouge, Jeune Création and Galleria Continua; in festivals at FID Marseille, Nuit Blanche at MAHJ Paris, the Cold Summer festival at the Ludwig Forum Museum in Aachen, Germany, and at the Assistances seminar at Kunstraum Lüneburg, Germany. Her textual work has been published by Sternberg Press (Keren Cytter Does Not Like to Share, 2023) and her films are supported by the production company La Cellule, Paris.
