Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Architecture and design

Galaad Van Daele is an architect, editor and researcher active in Paris, Zurich & Brussels. His research focuses mainly on spatial objects that challenge the separation constructed between nature and culture. He has tackled questions of artificial topographies around the Mediterranean; of extractivism and nature politics; of images, spaces and decoration as ideological tools; and is recently focused on the possibility of writing a history of architecture that acknowledges the various layers of geological presence existing inside of built spaces. Tapping into philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, political theory but also geology or biogeochemistry, and working with writing and photography as media, he outlines alternative and transversal modes of thinking about spatial productions and architectural historiographies, beyond the dissociation between the human and the terrestrial.

After several years practicing in Belgium at 51N4E, he has been teaching architectural design since 2017 at the Chair of Affective Architectures – Studio An Fonteyne at ETH Zurich. Since 2020, he is a doctoral candidate in that same school, with a research project focusing on the Grotta Grande – a cave-like building erected in Florence in the 16th century. In parallel, he is also one of the editors of Brussels-based architecture and art magazine Accattone. Beyond the many texts he publishes there, he also regularly contributes articles to other European publications, such as “Extractopia” and “Planetary Rights, at Last!” in Arts of the Working Class (Berlin, 2020), “Le Rocher de l’Être Suprême” in Plan Libre (Toulouse, 2021), or “Geophilia” in Habitante (Paris, 2022). As an independent researcher, he has been associated with international architecture exhibitions with projects such as Hidden Dimensions at the Lisbon Triennial in 2019, or 2038 in the German Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale (as a member of the scientific committee).

Visual arts

Moana Van Der Maesen is a Franco-Tahitian painter who grew up on the island of Tahaa in French Polynesia, a paradise known as the “Vanilla Island.”

After a career in the private sector, Moana chose to follow a passion for nature and environmental conservation. In 2019, during a world tour exploring innovations in environmental protection, painting emerged as a new form of expression and a way to channel this mission. Deeply transformed by this journey, Moana has dedicated themselves fully to painting since 2021.

Self-taught, Moana draws inspiration from the beauty of marine life and is driven by a commitment to preserving the planet.
