Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Niina Vatanen is a multidisciplinary artist working with photography, text, archives, and more recently also with plants and moving image. Drawing from personal diaries and museum archives, she explores time and our perception of it as the core question in her work. In her multilayered works, Vatanen carefully directs the viewer’s gaze while exploring the relationship between the perceptible and the imperceptible.

Vatanen’s work has been shown in numerous galleries, museums, and photo festivals in Finland and internationally, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Greece, and South Korea, among them C/O Berlin, The Finnish Museum of Photography, and the Daegu Photo Biennale. Vatanen currently lives and works in Helsinki.
