Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Evita Vasiljeva (b. 1985, Riga, Latvia) works in sculpture, installation, and sound. Drawing from her upbringing in post-Soviet Latvia, she incorporates imagery of generic architecture and rough suburban landscapes into her work. Using materials like concrete and armature, Vasiljeva manipulates and repurposes them to create her unique aesthetic. In her practice, manual labor and intellectual effort occur simultaneously, merging into a single process. Her works reflect her contemplation of the eventual exhibition, resulting in what may be seen as solidified, temporary thoughts. Her sculptures appear to be deteriorating from a once more advanced state or are works in progress that suggest future development. Vasiljeva explores the relational dynamics between space, architecture, memory, and the spectator’s body, maintaining a sensitive interaction with the environment while revealing both doubt and potential for growth.
