Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Joëlle Ferly’s art practice spans across photography, art video, performance, writing and storytelling. Previous art projects have included a 24 hour-performance and a year-long sound trip across Guadeloupe.

Currently, the artist is working on a film project for the next edition of Les nuits Blanches (Paris 2024) under the curatorship of Claire Tancons.

Joëlle is also known for being the founder of L’Artocarpe, the first collective platform run by and for artists, in Guadeloupe which ensures the promotion of contemporary art at an international level, through mainly art residencies, exhibitions and conferences.

With over 75 members from Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the rest of the world, L’Artocarpe has become a leading space to reflect upon and rethink art practices, both creatively and theoretically. L’Artocarpe is constantly approached by top-range professionals, curators, art critics or academics and has become a real referee to many artists, providing them a stepping stone in their careers.

L’Artocarpe is also well known for its critical discourse, which enables to get an better overview on the emergence of contemporary art in Guadeloupe. In 2017-2018, L’Artocarpe delivered a cycle of 10 conferences on contemporary art for Mémorial ACTe.

After a successful training in Vienna, Austria in curating practices, Joëlle has starting working with artists on curatorial projects for Fondation Clément (Martinique), as well as smaller platforms.

The last edition of art residencies led by L’Artocarpe took place at sea, on a old tall ship, which was sailing throught the Caribbean sea with a total of 6 artists (2022 and 2023).
