Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Olivia Funes Lastra, born in 1995 in Wellington, New Zealand, is a visual artist from Buenos Aires. She graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy in 2020. In 2021, she pursues the post-graduate Programa de Artistas at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella.

In the same year, her installation “Pintura-Andando” joins the FRAC Île-de-France collection. In 2019, she is resident artist at ESMoA (El Segundo Museum of Art), Los Angeles. Olivia Funes Lastra is nominated artist-in-residence at Casa Velazquez for 2023-2024.

Her work has been shown in numerous group exhibitions in France and abroad: DOC! (2023), FRAC Picardie (2022), Universidad Torcuato di Tella (2022), Lago Film Fest (2021), Taca Studios (2021), Galerie Ygrec (2016) and soon at the Institut Français in Madrid.

Olivia Funes Lastra investigates the possible analogies between language, memory and architecture in the experience of migration and the hybrid identities that can emerge as a result. The artist is interested in the way in which places construct our subjectivities and subsequently inhabit us, driven by the idea of a mental architecture that is built up as we experience places. Her work traverses installation, performance, writing, video and always by way of painting.

“Olivia Funes Lastra creates “pictorial spaces” whose vivid colors, composed of wall paintings and dyed fabric sections, delineate ephemeral, nomadic, mental and fictional architectures. Greatly inspired by literature, the phenomena of translations and the passage from one language to another, Olivia Funes Lastra activates her installations with performative readings that resonate with words and colors from elsewhere.”

– Excerpt from a text written by Ida Soulard for the group exhibition ‘Transmeare’ at Frac Picardie, 2022.
