Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Born in 1987 in Kanazawa, Japan, Makiko Furuichi lives and works in Nantes, France. She graduated from the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (2011) and the Kanazawa College of Art in Japan (2009).

She develops a pictorial work on different media and that she experiments in installations and sculptures. In 2018, she is the recipient of the Visual Arts prize of the City of Nantes. In 2021, she is a laureate of the Ackerman + Fontevraud residency, she paints a huge surface in the troglodyte cellars inspired by cave art. She also created a decoration for the bell of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud.

Grimacing faces, thieving little hands, ticklish, thin and mischievous, Makiko Furuichi’s subjects come from a tragicomic world tinged with a feeling that the Japanese know as niyari, the grotesque spirit of something ugly and funny. A sincere buffoonery that seriously explores debility in its various aspects, especially that of weakness and fragility.

Her publishing work counts more than fifteen personal and collective publications to his credit, including both comics and artists’ books.
