Artists in residence
Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Andrea Stewart and Thibault Bertin-Maghit are Canadian musicians who specialize in chamber music, historical performance, and contemporary music. Their artistic approach includes creative programming, original arrangements, and the search for new instrumental sounds. They are based in Montréal, Canada.
Andrea is a period and modern cellist and viola da gambist, and Thibault is a period and modern double bassist and arranger. Leading ensembles and curatorial projects for over 10 years, Andrea and Thibault use their experience working with chamber ensembles and Canada’s major early music ensembles to create fresh interpretations, ultimately fostering sincere and meaningful connections with the public. As musical collaborators, they prioritize artistic dialogue and discovery and continuously look for new perspectives in interpretation. They are the founders and directors of string nonet collectif9.
In residence at la Cité internationale des arts in June and July 2024, Andrea and Thibault are developing a duo project with cello and double bass with gut strings and historical bows, arranging works for their instrumentation while honoring the properties of the instruments. By allowing these qualities to inform the musical direction, they explore how a work, modern or early, can find a fresh voice with different tools.
