Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Visual arts

Anaïs Hazo was born in Paris in 1989. She studied fine arts, printmaking, publishing, design, fashion and environment. Anaïs is a researcher, artist and transdisciplinary designer.

She works on questioning and calming the paradoxes that inform our relationships to bodies, care and places. Her multi-faceted and committed practice translates into a protean body of work, based on a long journey of research. – For her, the process of elaboration of a work is as important as the objects it generates. Many of her works thus become real experimental lifestyles, in which she immerses herself entirely.

Hazo considers artistic production as a sensitive organism, in direct relation with the spaces that welcome it and the beings that meet and constitute it. In the current context of ecological and social emergency, she interacts with third places and self-managed territories, where she intertwines ancestral stories and contemporary mythologies, artifacts and daily life.

She invests the fields of design (objects, food, rituals, smells, environments), which she associates with the writing of texts linking narrative and theory. She also conducts collective practices of learning, conscious observation and care. Through these formats, she proposes to set in motion alternative forms of being-in-the-world.

Through installation, video, 3D and painting, Haonan He is developing an extra-disciplinary, multimedia practice informed by inquiry-creation, a subjective cartographic approach to the cosmology of the mandala. Her research traces the colonial history of the global spread of opium poppies from the 11th century to the present day, shedding light on the colonial roots of the problem of poppy-derived drugs and the complex dilemmas it poses today.

For the artist, colonial subjugation, technological acceleration in the drug industry and ecological shamanism are inextricably entangled. Going back over a long history, he criticizes the claim of science – as it was conceived in seventeenth-century Europe – to represent the world and detect its reminiscences in the cartographic technology of the digital age.

The result is a reduction and unification of worldviews and cosmologies. As a counterpoint, he develops the conditions for a multi-sensory dialogue with the poppy and its by-products, drawing on its materiality, botany, pharmacology, archives, and visual and sound experiments.

The artist graduated from the Master ArTeC at EUR ArTec in 2022 and is continuing his research in the Art post-graduate programme at ENSBA Lyon. His work has been exhibited at the Yunnan Art Museum in China, the Chengdu Biennial, and the MAC Lyon. In 2023, he was selected by the Centre Pompidou as one of five young artists for the “Culture d’avenir 2022-2023” intercultural project.
