Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Jammie Holmes is a self-taught painter from Thibodaux, Louisiana, whose works depict the contemporary lives of many Black families in the southern United States. Through portraits and paintings, Jammie Holmes depicts the rituals, traditions and difficulties of everyday life, paying particular attention to the deep sense of belonging to a place. Growing up 20 minutes from the Mississippi River, Jammie Holmes was confronted with the social and economic consequences of America’s dark past in a very poor region of the Sun Belt, where the vestiges of slavery coexist with labour disputes of varying intensity since the Thibodaux massacre in 1887. His depiction of simple moments of conviviality and joy among the Black population that nourishes Louisiana’s culture has made him an advocate for this community. His paintings lie between realistic representation and raw abstraction, incorporating text, symbols and objects rendered in a raw style that reflects a rapid transition between memory and canvas. He often refers to photographs of Louisiana but also draws heavily on his own memories of moments and scenes, working quickly to translate his emotions into paint.
