Artists in residence

Each year, the Cité internationale des arts welcomes more than 1,000 artists from around the world, offering them a space for creation, research, and exchange in Paris, in the Marais and Montmartre districts. Open to all artistic disciplines—visual arts, music, literature, film, design and architecture, performing arts, and curating—it enables artists to develop their projects in an environment that fosters experimentation and meaningful connections.

Kako Prugnières was born in 1963 in Mont-Vert les Hauts, Reunion Island.

A nature lover, he is close to the land and fascinated by trees. From his earliest canvases, trees stand out, bare trunks behind which appear scenes of life.

Family tree, palaver tree, tree of freedom, sacred tree… a forest of symbols. Through photo prints, the Tree highlights the contradictions between image memory and time. The Tree is born, lives, and endures, an immobile figure underlining the schizophrenia of our modern lives.

A common thread running through his creations, the Tree is now at the heart of the Tour des origines d’un nouveau monde. Since 2010, he has been reflecting on the root regions of a new world, which could be Réunion or a world of tomorrow.

Taking up the philosopher Emanuele Coccia’s expression that “there is nothing purely human, there is plant life in everything human, there is the tree at the origin of all experience”, he is developing research into multiple identities and our different affiliations.

Kako Prugnières explores the ecological question and man’s place in the living world, developing around the Tree an aesthetic, poetic, and personal reflection on the relationship between man and nature.

The tree becomes the physical presence of our relationship with the world, symbolizing the link between reality and our imagination and opening up the space for what Wilhiam Zitte has called Artgenealogy.

In 2019, he will also be working with artist Stéphane Kenkle on an ecological art-growing project on a 6-hectare plot of land. The idea is to contribute to the ‘re-colonisation’ of space by nature, and to give back to nature, and therefore to trees, the place that anthropocentrism has taken away from them.
